Even though I haven't played this game in six months, I really wanted to see if I could get it running with the new Ubuntu. I had heard good things so I gave it a go.It's pretty crazy how easy it was to get this running well. the last couple of years I've been more of a Debian Etch guy but because of non-kosher packages and various hackery my Etch box was seriously brain damaged.
- AMD Opteron 64 4400 4MB cache
- 2Gigs of Ram
- Nvidia 8600 512mb
- ubuntu 7.10
- wine 9.49
t was the perfect Opportunity to give 7.10 a shot. I hate myself for liking it, it's so easy it feels like I'm cheating. The default Ubuntu Repositories had everything I needed for programming and gaming. I'm going to be a quiet convert until Etch can catch up.
I had already configured the Nvidia Binary drivers and compiz-fusion awesomeness. The cool part is I was able to do everything in an Ubuntu-Kosher way, minimizing the risk of everything breaking with a future package upgrade.
I just downloaded the complete version of wow from here.
followed these instructions: http://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=579378
Then downloaded the Burning Crusade Patch from my Wow Account, and installed everything.
There was really minimal nessesary configuration. A little Registry tweaking. I've found it works much better in windowed mode. I had to manually type in my display resolution in "WTF/Config.wtf" and set it to openGL rendering but that's about it. Now if I can get AutoCAD installed I can be 100% free from windows.
